Peg McCreary
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY...
Peg McCreary is an accomplished abstract painter who has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. Her works are in numerous private and corporate collections, including Berkshire Capital Corporation, the Pershing Square Company and the Buckingham Hotel, whose collection she recently joined as the second prize winner in the "Buckingham Prize for the Expression of Music Through Art".

She is the recipient of a merit scholarship at the Art Students League and is an Artist Showcase award winner in the Manhattan Arts International Cover Competition, and she received a scholarship in portraiture at the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland.

McCreary grew up in Cleveland and spent the first half of her life involved in the classical music that would eventually find expression in her abstract paintings. She has played double bass with several orchestras, including the Cleveland Philharmonic and the Cleveland Women's Orchestra. She also played the viola da gamba with an early music performing group, the Collegium Musicum.

McCreary earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Ohio State University, with a major in English and a minor in German Literature and was awarded a graduate assistantship to the OSU School of Music, where she majored in musicology and minored in art history. While in graduate school she was the classical music critic for the college newspaper, and the program annotator for the college orchestra, in which she also played. She continues to study piano, most recently enjoying explorations into works of Brahms and Rachmaninoff.

In the early '90's McCreary began focusing her creative energies on abstract painting because she felt the need to move from the interpretive art of the musician to the more directly creative role of the painter. For the past ten years she has studied composition and color theory at the Art Students League with the abstract painter Frank O'Cain, winning prizes for her work. She has traveled to Scotland and England in the study of landscape abstraction, and to Egypt, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Germany in the research and analysis of art and sculpture. She lives in Jersey City and is a regular participant in the annual Jersey City Artist Tour.

Peg McCreary belongs to Midtown West Art Associates, The West Side Arts Coalition, Metropolitan Artists and the National Collage Society and her works have been reviewed and reproduced in Art Business News, The Jersey Journal, The Jersey City Reporter, Gallery&Studio, ArtSpeak, West Side Beat and Manhattan Arts International.
